The Benefits of Learning Creative Cooking

January 24th, 2008

Enrolling in a cooking class is one of the best ways to improve your culinary skills. Whether you are a seasoned professional, or just starting out, every one can benefit from cooking lessons. You may be able to find a culinary school in your neighborhood to help expand your outlook on food and how it is prepared. You may want to take just one class on a new dish or technique. There are many specialty shops that offer creative cooking classes and on occasion your local upscale grocery store may even offer them.

Cooking classes are a great way for you to learn to enjoy food. I am not just talking about eating the food, but the time and thought that goes into creating a dish or a meal the proper way. Our society has recently become focused on fast food. We have lost the art of cooking. Remember the way your grandmother’s food tasted? You could taste each and every ingredient that she used, and once you were finished, full or not, you wanted more. That is because there were no microwaves or frozen dinners or thawing out your meat before you are ready to prepare it.

Dinner was something that was started early in the day and took hours to make. I encourage you to pick up a cookbook like the “The Joy of Cooking.” This is one of the classic cookbooks that not only gives you the ingredients, but how to mix and prepare them. Some think that thoughtlessly throwing all the ingredients in a bowl and mixing is the same as carefully adding the ingredients one by one. When tasting the finished product you discover the difference between a well thought meal which has been prepared with care.

Many of us do not have all day to prepare dinner for our families because of work and other obligations. A cooking class provides you with new shortcuts and other techniques to use to help improve the quality and taste of the food and the time it takes to prepare it. Instead of marinating all day on low heat, you could use a crock pot and set it on low when you leave for work in the morning. There is very little to do to finish preparing the meal when you arrive home.

Cooking classes also offer you a way to learn how to shop for and prepare many different ethnic foods. Recipes from far away places are a great way to bring your family together while enjoying preparing and trying them right in your own home. Save the money that would have been spent at a an ethnic restaurant and cook together as a family with the tools and techniques taught at a culinary class.

Main courses are not the only recipes taught at these classes but also classic and impressive desserts. Cooking schools also offer many dessert classes as well. Perhaps all you would like to do is learn how to decorate a cake like a pro. Sign up for a cake decorating class. Cooking classes also emphasise the social aspect of cooking. Sharing a large kitchen at the school with several other students who also enjoy cooking and have a desire to hone their skills is a great place to meet people.

There is another added bonus to cooking classes and schools that you may want to consider. If creative cookingis your passion, these classes could open you up to a new career or business idea. I have met people that came for a specific purpose which had nothing to do with a business, ended up taking what they learned in class and put it to work for them. While at first they did it part-time, they eventually found they had their own very successful business. What would your friends and family pay to have a cake decorated? How much for a professionally prepared meal for an important dinner party in their home? The possibilities are endless when we look at the benefits cooking schools and classes have to offer.

Types of Cookware

January 24th, 2008

With all the hustle and bustle that goes on in our lives each and everyday it easy to understand why so many people overlook the simple little things that can improve their day and enhance relationships they have with those that they care about. I am referring to preparing meals for yourself and your family. While meals through the week may consist of whatever is easiest to throw together, the weekend at least offers us a time where we can dazzle our family with our culinary talents.

The foundation of preparing a gourmet meal is the cookware that we use. Before you start to say that the cookware doesn’t affect the quality of the food you are preparing I would like you to stop and think for a moment. Would you rather eat food that is burnt or undercooked because the heat was not distributed evenly or food that was cooked properly and evenly so that the taste of the herbs and spices came through the food?

Keep in mind, that cookware that has hot spots will cook your entire meal at a different rate. The type of cookware you prefer, whether it is stainless steel, copper, aluminum or cast iron is not as important as the quality of the cookware you are using. Quality cookwarewill help make sure that the heat is distributed evenly for proper cooking, and the lids to the cookware will fit appropriately to help avoid splashes and help seal in the heat.

The main concern among most people though when it comes to purchasing quality cookware has more to do with their budget then it does with the way your food will taste when you cook with it. While quality cookware does not have to cost a fortune, it also doesn’t have to be a matching set. Each type of cookware has a specific enough purpose that buying individual pieces can help complete the essential quality cookware needs.

For example, copper pots and pans are the most expensive and they distribute heat the best. However they are not ideal for preparing all types of foods, they scratch and depending on what you are cooking in them, they may transfer a metallic taste you to your feast. If there is one piece of copper cookware you must have it is a copper mixing bowl. The copper mixing bowl is essential in beating egg whites; the copper lets you beat the white to their maximum volume.

Aluminum is less expensive, does not distribute heat as well as the copper and can also transfer a metallic taste to you food. If you are going to purchase aluminum then make sure that you are getting anodized pans. This will help make them last longer and decrease the reactivity with your food. Cast iron skillets are wonderful for specialized cooking and searing the best steak you will ever have. They are slightly more expensive then aluminum and they need to be kept seasoned to prevent sticking.

Stainless steel pots and pans are what I like to call the middle ground. They are in the mid price range and distribute heat better then aluminum but not as well as copper and it doesn’t give you food a metallic taste. It is easy to clean and is good for everyday cooking.

Are Gourmet Foods For Everyone?

January 24th, 2008

When you think gourmet foods what comes to your mind? Expensive, only available in the top restaurants of the world presented in unique design by men that speak with accents wearing tuxes? The truth is that they are not as expensive as you think, they do not need a culinary master to be prepared and they do not take as much time as you may believe.

Gourmet foods can appeal to all the senses. Taste, touch, sight, and sound. Finer gourmet foods when beautifully presented and carefully tasted can equal the experience of seeing an original piece of a masters work of art. The aroma that lingers in the air and the beauty in the way it was arranged can be worth the price that some of the finest restraunts may charge. Only high quality food and drink will suffice for those that consider food to be a delicacy and treasure.

With that being said, how does a person go about selecting everyday foods from the local market and preparing them at home to equal those prepared by a world renown chef? I completely believe that preparing gourmet meals at home for yourself, several times a week, is possible and not saved for those times when special dinners are required for guests while entertaining. Where to shop for gourmet foods? That depends on where you live. Gourmet quality items can be found at your local grocery or farmers market, it just takes some looking. There are some areas that have specialty stores or gourmet shops. Remember, I said it doesn’t have to be expensive to be gourmet it has to be high quality.

So you are going to look for foods that look good, are high quality and are fresh. You want foods that are not processed or packaged and in most cases have not been treated with pesticides and such. Pick the freshest foods if at all possible. If fresh foods are not an option some frozen varieties are acceptable but never use canned. You know the difference in quality foods when you see them. They are usually the foods that are packaged attractively and displayed in a way that makes you want to buy them. You are consuming it, it should be high quality.

If you are not sure how to go through the grocery and pick out the high quality foods, then you can turn to the internet. There are many quality gourmet shops online. If you are going to use the online approach to gourmet food shopping I recommend making a list of what you are looking for. Once you have that list you will want to find the better sites that offer the best foods. Places such as Amazon.com can help you locate the foods you are looking for and offers you a simpl way to price compare.

Price compare, paying more doesn’t mean that you are getting better quality of food. The quality of the food is not always revealed in the price tag. I have been to restaurants and had a filet mignon and paid an insane amount of money for a steak and then gone to a chain restaurant and had a filet that was ten times better and cost 1/3 of the “fine restaurants” filet.

Shopping for the finer gourmet foods takes time. It can be an enjoyable time. Planning ahead and getting bargins by watching for coupons in your local paper is also wise. Instead of taking a long county drive on a Saturday, try visiting one or two local markets browsing up and down the isle looking for special food items to create a gourmet meal. Eating should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, so take the time to prepare your gourmet meals.

Healthy Mexican Food

January 24th, 2008

Mexican cuisine is a style of food that began in Mexico, and is widely known for its vibrant flavor and amazing decoration. Rice, beans, tortillas, and a wide variety of spices are commonly used in many Mexican dishes, along with beef, pork, chicken, and a range of different peppers. Mexican recipes vary from region to region, but many of the same original ideas are still seen all over the globe today. Mexican cuisine is typically cooked in large amounts of grease and fat, making it one of the most fattening styles of food in the world.

Although authentic Mexican food can be unhealthy, there are many great recipes available for healthy Mexican meals. One ingredient that can easily be replaced is grease, which is usually a staple when making dishes prepared with tortillas. Many Mexican recipes involve frying tortillas, such as taquitos, tacos, and even tostadas. While the fried tortillas are usually the main portion of the dish, using oil to prepare them adds unhealthy fat and caloric intake. One alternative would be using soft tortillas, such as making soft tacos rather than frying the tortillas. There are also several recipes that involve tortillas without being fried, such as quesadillas or baked tortilla chips.

Another problem that can make Mexican food unhealthy is the amount of sodium in the dishes, which gives the food the strong flavor many love. The excessive use of salt and salt-based spices can be eliminated, but the flavor can still remain with the use of hot chili peppers and fresh vegetables such as onions and bell peppers. Rice can be prepared with low sodium chicken broth rather than using salt, and bean dishes can be prepared with the use of fresh ingredients as well.

Milk is another popular ingredient used in Mexican cooking, along with other high fat dairy products such as cheese and sour cream. While these are key ingredients in many popular recipes, the dairy products can be replaced with low-fat or fat-free versions in order to lower the fat intake. Using low-fat milk in a recipes rather than whole milk can reduce the caloric intake by almost half, depending on the amount of milk and other dairy products used in the dish.

Eggs are a main ingredient found in various breakfast dishes, and although they are healthy, many egg recipes are packed full of fat and calories. Huevos rancheros, a popular dish around the world, are typically prepared using whole eggs, oil, various salsas, and fried tortillas. Egg whites can be used rather than whole eggs, and tortillas can be prepared in the oven rather than in a frying pan with oil. Fresh salsas and peppers can be added in place of salt and seasonings, and the dish will still come out tasting amazing.

With the rising incidence of obesity occurring, it is best to find healthier alternatives for many popular dishes. Because Mexican food is well known for its high fat and calorie total, it is important to try low-fat and fat-free alternatives since they still contain the bold flavor most Mexican cuisine is known for. A delicious meal doesn’t have to be full of fat, and healthy Mexican food can still taste amazing with the help of low-fat ingredients and fresh vegetables and spices.

Growing Heirloom Tomatoes For A Flavor Packed Treat

January 19th, 2008

Heirloom tomatoes are some of the many older varieties from which seeds have been saved over the years and passed down from one generation to the next. Most tomatoes purchased today in supermarkets are hybrids which have been bred to produce higher yields, uniformity of shape and color, shipping durability and longer shelf life, rather than flavor.

Heirloom tomatoes have become increasingly popular and seeds have become more readily available in recent years. Heritage tomatoes just cannot be beaten for their outstanding flavor and the beauty they add to recipes and dishes with their many shapes, sizes, and colors. Heirloom tomatoes have become very popular with gardeners due to their excellent flavor and wide diversity of color range.

Heirloom tomatoes often were bred for flavor, rather than resistance to disease, pests, weather extremes or the rigors of transport. Heirloom tomatoes are much tastier than hybrid tomatoes and can be easily reproduced true to type by collecting seeds each year.

The popularity of farmers markets has contributed significantly to the retail revival of heirloom tomatoes, for practical reasons. Discover why heirloom tomatoes have the fabulous old-time tomato taste you remember … or may never have experienced. And if you grow a bumper crop you can learn how to can tomatoes and enjoy that wonderful tomato taste all year round.
